A gestão de arquivos não trata apenas de manter documentos a salvo, trata também de conservar evidências, de uso responsável e de transparência.
Quando nos apercebemos que existem procedimentos de arquivo que não são completamente eficazes, que a segurança dos registos não é assegurada, começamos a duvidar das instituições nas quais deveríamos confiar. Para que as instituições mantenham a sua credibilidade, tanto internamente, como para o exterior (e no caso das instituições governamentais, para os cidadãos), é essencial ter políticas claras sobre a forma como os documentos são tratados, como são avaliados, como podem ser acedidos e eliminados (seja por destruição, seja mantendo-os como testemunhos valiosos). Afinal de contas, não podemos negar o papel dos arquivos e a sua importância em avivar a nossa memória, em provar os nossos feitos.

Recordkeeping isn’t just about keeping records safe, it is also about keeping evidence, responsible use and transparency. It is about democracy and having means to ensure that individuals and entities may become responsible for their actions.
When we learn that record policies are not fully effective, that the safety of records is not ensured we start doubting the institutions on which we should rely. For institutions to keep their credibility, either internally, but also to the exterior, (and in the case of governmental institutions, to citizens) it is essential to have clear policies on the way we treat documents, on the way we appraise them, we set access and dispose them, either by destroying them, either by keeping them as valuable testimonies. After all, we can’t neglect the role of records and their importance on bringing our memory alive, on proving our deeds.

Não estando tão ciente como deveria, do enquadramento profissional dos arquivistas em Portugal, ocorrem-me muitas questões. Muitas delas terão respostas complicadas mas outras terão, certamente, respostas óbvias (mesmo essas necessitam de ser perguntadas).
Na semana passada um dos meus professores, a propósito de um trabalho da disciplina de contextos profissionais internacionais, comentou que depois de fazer alguma investigação se deparou com muita informação sobre os arquivos em Portugal, mas toda ela em português. E isto faz sentido, se pensarmos na comunidade portuguesa de arquivistas, na divulgação do papel dos Arquivos e dos Arquivistas à sociedade portuguesa… mas pensando do ponto de vista da comunidade de arquivistas ‘global’, parece-me que o uso exclusivo da língua portuguesa pode ser um obstáculo para a partilha de conhecimento e de práticas. Cada vez mais, me faz sentido partilhar, trocar experiências, aprender com o que de melhor se faz no mundo (no qual Portugal se inclui), questionar em conjunto.

Not being as aware as I should, about the professional framework of archivists in Portugal, a lot of questions come to my mind. Many of them may have complicated answers but others, will certainly have obvious answers (even those need to be asked).
Last week, one of my teachers, regarding a class assignment for the International Professional Contexts, made a comment on how, after some research on Portuguese archives, he found a lot of information on-line, but, all of it in Portuguese. And this makes sense, if we think on the Portuguese community of archivists, and in the transmission of the role of the Archives and Archivists to the Portuguese society… but when we come to think from the point of view of the ‘global’ community of Archivists, it seems to me that, the exclusive use of the Portuguese language can be an obstacle to the sharing of knowledge and practice. More and more, it makes me sense to share, exchange experience, learn with what is best done in the world (where Portugal is included), question together.
